What You Need to Know about Baby Products

There are literally hundreds of things to do before baby comes, buying baby products shouldn’t add to your stress, but help relieve it some. Unfortunately though, everyone and their mothers (literally) have tons of unwanted advice on what to buy for baby; that could really stress a parent out. Don’t think this article is going to be much different. Well, maybe a little different, you came HERE remember? But we’re not going to bother you with anecdotes or show your spouse naked pictures of you at three months old. What we are going to do is offer a few suggestions with the “whys” for you to consider. Hopefully, unlike the three hour conversation over how castor oil was great, this might help you out some.

Strollers are a must. You won’t find a supped up stroller out there with a speedometer and heads up display so baby has a clear shot with its missiles but there are options. Light strollers vs. heavy strollers are the main concern. Here’s what you need to look at: lifestyle. Are you a take baby around the block kind of person or do you plan on drives to the park or beach? Light strollers are great because they’re smaller and store in the house easier, and let’s face it; you’re going to have plenty of clutter in your future. A lot of the heavy strollers are actually car seats as well, that halves the amount of space needed in a way and the extra storage space is nice for juice and toys during extended time away from the house.

Diapers are a concern and a huge expense, particularly if you plan on using disposable diapers. Due to concerns over landfills and environmental issues, many parents are choosing to go green with diapers. (I’ll save that joke for the people I know.) No matter which you choose though, remember that fit has a direct effect on function. A diaper that is too loose will not catch everything it needs to and one that is too tight might cut off baby’s circulation. So be mindful of the fact that it’s a diaper, not a tourniquet.

In your quest for the perfect baby products you’re going to encounter many, many play pens. The natural inclination is to think you can just get one later, when baby is older. This is not a good idea. A play pen is your baby’s protection when you are not holding them. It’s a safe environment for them to learn to roll over and to stand up. As infants, it’s a place where you know no one will step on them. Don’t be afraid to get one right off.

Your baby will need a bed too. As infants, bassinets are the preferred bed as they are more mobile than full on baby beds. You can move a bassinet from room to room while baby sleeps because no monitor is as good as having baby right there with you. When they are old enough to move into a baby bed, get a bed with high rails. This will keep your baby from escaping and making their own snacks between feedings. (RIGHT!)

Blankets are an important concern as well. How many blankets do you need and what types are best? The answers to both of these questions are: all of them and yes. Different baby blankets have different uses. A nice warm fleece is great for cold weather and generally a good choice, however in a hot car on a summer day? No. Use a nice thin linen type blanket. Blankets are also great catch alls for your baby. By that we mean is your baby will use it as a best friend, cover, shade and a bib. It’s for the last function that you really should consider getting as many blankets as possible and always keep extras on hand.

Bottles are very important. Even if the plan is to go “au natural” you will still need bottles for juice and the like. Mom is not a slurp-ee machine you know. In all truthfulness, design doesn’t matter too much. When buying bottles, look into the nipple quality and never put the nipples in the dish washer. The synthetic “rubber” the nipple is made out of can become dry and brittle with prolonged exposure to heat.

Obviously there are lots of other baby products your tricycle motor will need; these are just a few suggestions to help make life easier. You have a lot choices to make and now they affect someone else, so think well. You have many adventures ahead with baby and you should be able to enjoy them with as little hassle as possible.
